Bougatsa
Warm, sweet and sticky, for most Greeks bougatsa is a filo pastry custard cream pie. If you live in Thessaloniki, the term bougatsa includes savoury pies too, filled with either kimas (minced meat) or tiri (cheese), as well as the sweet krema (custard cream) version, sprinkled with icing sugar and cinnamon. Whichever you choose, it makes a delicious start to the day, served up cut into bite-size pieces, with coffee for breakfast.
Where to try it
In Thessaloniki, Giannis is excellent and stays open till 3am, making it ideal for a late-night snack.
